Light traveling from a medium with a high refractive index to a low refractive index experiences total refl ection when the incident angle exceeds the critical angle. The case of 100% refl ection is called total internal refl ection (TIR), in which case the light is confi ned within the medium having the higher refractive index. This phenomenon is used in optical transmission fi bers and light guide plates in LCD backlight units.
